Our History

Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory has been serving Mason City area families for years. We are honored to be a part of the rich history of this community and plan to be a part of it for many years to come.

Today's Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory had its beginning in the early days of Mason City. Founded in 1863 by Benjamin Randall, it was the first furniture and undertaking establishment in North Iowa and one of Mason City's first businesses. After Mr. Randall's death, the business passed to his three sons. In 1920, the business was purchased by Harvey B. Major and was operated as the Randall Major Funeral Home at 3rd and North Delaware. In 1939, the funeral home moved to its current location, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. In 1959, Richard D. Erickson purchased the business from Mr. Major becoming the Major Erickson Funeral Home. Since that time, extensive modernization has taken place. Robert D. Erickson returned home to Mason City in 1984. Bob purchased the business from his father in 1990. Since then, the funeral home has undergone additional modernization with the installation of an on-site crematory in 1999. In 2018, Brian Cataldo along with his partner, John Weishaar, purchased the family owned businesses in Mason City and Charles City from Bob and Toni Erickson. Brian and John are honored to serve the families of both communities. Bob and Toni will continue to be a part of the Mason City community and the funeral home.
