Paul Marshall Strathman

Mason City

Paul Marshall Strathman, 96, of Mason City, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 1, 2025, at the Nora Springs Care Center surrounded by family. Paul generously donated his body to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. A memorial Service will be held Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S Georgia Ave., with Rev. Melanie Sickels officiating. A visitation will be held an hour prior at the church. Memorials may be directed towards First United Methodist Church or the donor’s choice.

Paul was born March 14, 1929, in Dixon, Iowa the son of Harry and Mignon (Bunting) Strathman. He graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1947 where he was active in track, football, and basketball. He was a three year starter in basketball with his team winning the 1947 state championship. He was all-state in basketball and all-conference utility in football. Paul attended Parsons College where he continued to play basketball and football. He started every basketball game during his four years there. He was all-conference in football and basketball while attending college and graduated in 1951. He went on to get his masters in administration from the University of Iowa.

Paul married ShirleyDee Hilleary October 15, 1950 in Fairfield. He taught and coached in Keswick, Richland, Washington, and Mason City. He took the boys' basketball team from Richland to the state tournament in 1953. He taught and coached in Mason City from 1951 to 1991, with one year each as head football coach and athletic director.

He enjoyed golfing, jogging, walking, riding his bike, daily coffee with friends, crossword puzzles, and spending time with his family at the lake. He had two hole-in-ones, both on #17, at Highland Golf Course.

Paul is survived by his children, Susan Keil and husband Bob of Thompson, Steven Strathman and wife Pam of Edina, Minnesota, and Michael Strathman and wife Sharon of Tempe, Arizona; grandchildren Jason Keil, Kristine Perkins, Michael Strathman, Benjamin Strathman, Ashley Strathman, Katie Lugar, David Strathman, and Andrew Strathman; 12 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Joy Curtis and her husband Bruce, sister-in-law Paula Hilleary, brother-in-law Bud Hilleary, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife ShirleyDee, his mother Mignon Drummond, sisters Donna Larsen and Janice Stender, brother-in-laws Bob Stender, Warren Larsen, Jack Hilleary, and Morris Hilleary, and niece Melinda Larsen.
