She was born on the family farm South of Mason City, IA, and her grandfather, Dr. Marston, helped with her delivery. Pat attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason City High School. After high school, she attended the University of Iowa to study Art; she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Pat married William (Bill) Bastian in January of 1942. She was a homemaker for many years, and she and Bill had three children, Michael (Leoma) Bastian, Stephanie (John) Ball, and Erin (Dennis) Phillips. After Bill retired, Pat worked at Lundberg’s Department Store in clothing sales; she enjoyed this line of work and customers often requested her expertise. Pat had nine grandchildren: Kate and Joe Ball, Jennifer and Scott Bastian, Todd Newton, Niki, Summer, Ben and Dan Zickefoose. Pat had fifteen great grandchildren, twelve boys and three girls. In Pat’s earlier years, she loved swimming and horse-back riding. In later years, Pat enjoyed bird watching, gardening, painting, entertaining friends and family, and reading books on the peaceful wrap-around porch of her beloved family cottage on the South Shore of Clear Lake, IA. Pat was known for her love of the color green and for signing letters and cards with her signature phrase, “oodles of love”. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her younger brother, Charles (Chuck) Kirk, and a younger sister, PollyAnn K. Mersky. Pat is survived by an older sister, Dorothy K. Leuken, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
