Madonna M. Whitehurst, 84, of Mason City, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Good Shepherd Health Center.

 

A funeral mass will be held at 10: 30 a.m., Monday, June 17, 2024, at Epiphany Parish Holy Family Catholic Church, 722 N. Adams in Mason City with Rev. Fr. Neil Manternach as celebrant. Cremation will follow the service with burial at a later date in Elmwood – St. Joseph Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, June 16th at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

 

Madonna May Whitehurst, the daughter of Emil and Florence (Sabelka) Shileny, was born November 29, 1939, in Cresco, Iowa. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Charles City in 1958. Madonna worked at Citizens National Bank in Charles City and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City. In 2002, she retired from Women’s Fashions at Sears in Mason City, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. She married Rollin Whitehurst at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on March 24, 1985. On October 10, 1988, they were remarried at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City by Msgr. Joseph Slepicka, a lifetime friend. Madonna was an avid crocheter and enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading. Her four children were her pride and joy.

 

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Tops 1343 in Mason City. She held several offices in Tops Clubs throughout the United States.

 

Madonna is survived by her husband and best friend, Rollin, of Mason City; four children: a daughter, Ann (John Mayer) Rottinghaus of Frankfort, IL, and three sons, Thomas Rottinghaus of Lee’s Summit, MO, Joseph (Shari) Rottinghaus of Mason City and Charles (Kirsten) Rottinghaus of Minnetonka, MN; a step-son, Matthew (Rebekah) Whitehurst of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Andrew, Alexander, JT, Ashley, Sydney, Carmen, Erik; a step-grandson, Dylan; and a sister, Rose Frein of Nashua.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; a step-son, Richard John Whitehurst; and brother-in-law, Mark Frein.
