John was born in Mason City on August 26, 1951, to John and Edith (Heaford) Boedeker. A sister Amanda joined him, and they grew up on the family farm north of Rockwell. He graduated from Rockwell Swaledale High School in 1969 and NIACC in 1971. John joined the Army Reserves in 1971 and served until 1977. He continued his education through night classes and graduated from Iowa State in 1978. John was an ISU supporter and would say “they were kind enough to let me graduate.”

John married Sherri Mayne in Creston, Iowa in 1974; they were blessed with two children John and Angela and raised them in Mason City. He always enjoyed youth sports and officiated until his children were old enough to participate. He coached both of his children and enjoyed travel ball with both. As his grandchildren began to play organized sports he enjoyed attending as many events as possible. We are sure he will continue to watch and cheer them on.

John served 40 years as the Cerro Gordo County Assessor, retiring in 2017. He took pride in his work and earned several professional designations and served as President of both the Iowa Certified Assessors and the Iowa State Association of Assessors.

He was active in community affairs. He was President of the North Iowa Regional Housing Authority, served as President of the MC YMCA Board of Directors, and Treasurer of Trinity Lutheran Church. John served on the Mason City High School Booster Club for 8 years. He was proud that the club was awarded the Booster Club of the year in 1999/2000 when he was Board President.

John is survived by his wife, Sherri; son, Dr. John (Jamie) and grandchildren, Jack and Kate Boedeker of Mason City; daughter, Angela (Todd) Cyr Wenninger and grandchildren Max Wenninger, Mia and Lyndie Cyr of Oregon, WI. He is also survived by his sister Amanda (Jim) Ragan, sisters-in-law, Sharma (Roger) Parlett and Shelley (Rick) Wolff, as well as many nieces and nephews.
