Jan was born June 3, 1935 the daughter of Irwin and Mildred (Boster) Leonard in Emmetsburg, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Raymond Overbeck on April 4, 1953 in Mason City. To this union three children were born.

Jan was an avid reader of everything. She read history as well as romance, but macular degeneration took her ability to continue with her passion. Jan would spend hours in her rose garden tending to her precious flowers that she would nurture and enter into competitions at the fair where she was rewarded with many ribbons over the years. Jan’s outdoor enthusiasm didn’t end in the garden, she loved to fish, especially when the family would go to Spirit Lake for a time of relaxation. Jan was very talented with a needle and thread and was known for sewing clothing for all the kids and making many decorative pieces with her embroidery and crocheting skills. Jan has always loved music but as her eyesight was failing that love became stronger. She was a fan of many, but Blake Shelton was her ALL TIME FAVORITE, she was able to see him in concert twice and even enjoyed a meet and greet with him. Most of all she was extremely proud of her family and wanted to tell anyone willing to listen about them.

Those thankful for having shared in Jan’s life include her children, Kathy (Ken) Tyler, Phil Overbeck, Russell (Jennifer) Overbeck; seven grandchildren, Brad (Dena) Tyler, Michelle Tyler Bemis, James Tyler, Joshua (DeDe) Overbeck, Aaron Overbeck, Kyle Overbeck, Heather (Jake) Kappmeyer; ten great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; two brothers, James (Kathy) Leonard, Nick (Debbie) Leonard; one sister, Susan (Duke) Calahan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
