James L. VanHorn

James L. VanHorn, 77, of Nashua, formerly of Charles City, died Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, IA. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at the VFW, 1505 N Grand Ave, Charles City, IA, with Rev. Ruth Yeaton of the First Baptist Church, Charles City officiating. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the James VanHorn memorial fund in care of the family. James was born on May 29, 1936, in Parkersburg, IA, the son of Harm and Cleo (Anway) VanHorn. He attended Parkersburg High School before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force on September 1, 1955. He was honorably discharged on June 13, 1959. James worked as an Inspector for Beatrice Creamery in Fredericksburg, IA, before his retirement in 1999. He loved spending time with his family, horses, visiting with people, and cooking for the monthly VFW BBQ chicken dinners. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, AM VETS, and the Historical Society. He enjoyed helping with many aspects at the Bradford Museum (tours, lawn care, gift shop etc.…) until his health declined. He also enjoyed helping his nephew and niece with their sweet corn business. He loved talking with people and had built many strong relationships over the years. James is survived by 2 children: Troy VanHorn and wife Kathy of Mason City; Brenda Boss and special friend Charlie Frascht of Miller, IA; grandchildren: Stacey Armstrong, Cody VanHorn and wife Jacqaline, Brooke and Josh Hamm, Cree and Cheyanne Gobeli, Nicole Boss and Tanner Frascht; great grandchildren: Ethan, Jada, Jayden, Gavin and Evan; 1 sister: Donna Muller and husband Raymond of Grundy Center, IA; and special nephew: Wendel Muller and wife Delane, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 7 siblings.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the James VanHorn memorial fund in care of the family.

Visitation:
There will be no visitation.

Service:
