Hazel Monson

Hazel J. Monson, 89, of Mason City, IA, died Friday, January 12, 2018, at her home. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. There will be a gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 2nd Street SE, Mason City, IA 50401.

Hazel was born February 1, 1928, in Worth County, IA, the daughter of Martin and Ada (Nelson) Bang. She graduated from Joice High School in 1945, where she played as a guard for the basketball team. On September 23, 1949, she married Telmer Huso in Fort Dodge, IA. She later married Clemmit Monson on April 2, 1982, in Forest City, IA. She moved to Mason City in 1954. Over the years, Hazel worked as a bookkeeper for David Manufacturing Company, 1st National Bank and Good Shepherd Health Center. Hazel enjoyed riding her motorcycle and stingray bicycle. She also enjoyed yard work, golfing, volleyball, boating, water skiing, roller skating, ice skating and bowling. She also enjoyed volunteering at Hospice of North Iowa, Crisis Intervention, Mercy Hospital and Habitat for Humanity. Hazel was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Senior Citizen’s Center where she enjoyed Wednesday afternoon dances and playing cards on Thursday’s.

Hazel is survived by 2 children: Terry Carden and husband Michael of Mesa, AZ and Brad Huso of Mason City; 2 grandchildren: Lindsay and Alissa; 3 great grandchildren: Makenna, Addison and Gavin; 2 brothers: Darrell Bang and wife Marilyn of Joice, IA and Darwin Bang and wife Thelma of Rochester, MN; a sister: Ardis Helland of Lewiston, MN; a step-son: Kevin Monson and wife Julie and their 3 children of Iowa City, IA, Diane Ehm and husband Maury and their 4 children of Grundy Center, IA, Carol Noren and her 2 sons of West Covina, CA and Sheila Davis and husband Dan and their 2 children of Forest City, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 husbands; a son in infancy: Thomas Huso; daughter-in-law: Carolyne Huso; 2 brothers: Roger Bang and Wayne Bang; and a step-son in infancy.
