Donovan R. Bates

Donovan “Don” Ray Bates, 74, of Burchinal, IA passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt, IA.  A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2 until 4 PM Sunday, April 28, 2024 at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Ave, Mason City, IA.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.majorericksonfuneralhome.com

Don was born August 12, 1949 the son of Donovan H. and Mildred M. (Kennedy) Bates in Rockwell, Iowa.  On December 10, 1971 Don was united in marriage to Becky Crawford in Hanford, IA.

Don loved working with wood and became a sought-after wood carver.  His artstic talents led to the creation of many works of art including Baggot Street, a sculpture housed in the lobby of Mercy One-North Iowa. He had a passion for gardening, bird-watching and preserving the natural environment.

Don is survived by his wife Becky; children, Amanda (Josh) Fischer, Abbigayl Bates, Adam Bates; two sisters, Nancy (Melvin) Anderson, Norma (Melvin) Beard; one brother, Lester Bates; five grandchildren, Sophia, Keelie, Isabel, Kayden, Ellie; and several nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Larry Bates; one sister-in-law, Gail Bates; and one niece.
