Darold (Dewey) LaVern Haag

July 5, 1932 — July 7, 2018

Darold LaVern “Dewey” Haag, 86, of Mason City, IA went to be with his Lord and Savior and joined his wife and son in heaven on Saturday, July 7, 2018.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, July 12, 2018 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City, Iowa with the Rev. Steve Hansen officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, July 11 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N Pennsylvania, Mason City, Iowa.

Dewey was born July 5, 1932 to Lloyd and Bernice Haag. He grew up in Mason City playing baseball with his friends, going fishing with his brothers, and helping his dad with the garden. He rode his bike all over the north east side of Mason City delivering papers and seeking adventures. Dewey joined the US Navy in 1952 and served during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Rochester. While in the Navy he learned his trade and the rank of Metalsmith 2nd Class. He was honorably discharged in 1956. After his service to our country, Dewey returned to Mason City and began working as a Sheet Metal Worker at Pauly’s. Dewey was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 45, and for 41 years worked on job sites throughout Iowa and the Midwest. He retired in 1992 allowing him to enjoy time with his grandchildren, to learn the art of baking cookies, and to earn the title of the official birthday cake baker for the family.

Dewey married Sharon Yezek on June 2, 1962. In their 51 years of marriage they shared so much love and made so many beautiful memories. Dewey and Sharon loved to fish. They could often be found in their matching red Lund coats hauling in some walleyes or pan fish. They truly enjoyed the years spent at Madison Lake and Lake Osakis fishing with their family. Dewey and Sharon were blessed with two children, Dean and Sheryl, Dean’s wife Kyla and Sheryl’s husband Jon, and two grandchildren, Joe and Kristin. Nothing made Dewey happier than time spent with his family.

A true craftsman, Dewey loved woodworking. There wasn’t much that he couldn’t build. Everyone in the family had side tables and nightstands created by his hands. In later years he loved helping his son-in-law, Jon, in his wood shop.

As the “Biscuit Man”, Dewey was the favorite human in the world for so many dogs. His never ending box of dog treats brought much joy to Dewey and the dogs he could find to share them with.

Dewey raised Vizslas and Chocolate Labs for many years. He loved hunting with the dogs and training them. In later years he traded dogs for cats and he was trained by Scamper to sit in his chair so she could be in his lap and get some loving. Scamper has been great company for Dewey since Sharon passed away in 2013.

Dewey is survived by his daughter, Sheryl Mariner and son-in-law Jon Mariner of Mason City, Iowa; grandson Joseph Mariner and his fiancé Lisa Cadwell of Helena, Montana; and granddaughter Kristin Engels and her husband Matt of Rockwell, Iowa. He will be missed by his nieces, nephews, cousins and other family. Dewey also leaves behind very special friends and neighbors who meant the world to him.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sharon Haag, son, Dean Haag and daughter-in-law, Kyla Haag, his parents Lloyd and Bernice Haag, brothers, Duane and Bill Haag, and sister Jeanie Haag.

Dewey will always be remembered for his great smile and his love for everyone.
