Dale Dennis Gettis, 98, of Mason City, Iowa, passed away Thursday, September 25, 2025, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center. A funeral service will take place at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N Pennsylvania Ave, with Pastor Chris McComic officiating, on Monday, September 29, 2025, at 11 a.m., with visitation half an hour prior. A reception will be held following the service. Interment will take place at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City. Memorials may be directed to the family of Dale Gettis.
Dale was born February 15, 1927, to Milton “Charlie” and Anna (Johnson) Gettis in rural Leland, Iowa. Dale and Clara (Ullestad) were married November 25, 1951, in Thompson, Iowa. They resided in several places across north-central Iowa, including their farm near Plymouth, Northwood, many years in Mason City, and Forest Plaza Assisted Living in Forest City, before moving to Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City earlier this year.
Dale enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1946 through 1948 and assisted with the construction of Thule Air Force Base in northwest Greenland.
Following his military service, Dale worked in road construction, heavy machinery operation, and served for thirty years as a carrier with the United States Postal Service until his retirement in 1989. He attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis.
Dale was involved in the American Legion, VFW, National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), and was a volunteer at the Mason City Senior Center. Dale enjoyed traveling to many places and enjoyed most things farm related. He was greatly loved by friends and family alike and will be deeply missed.
Dale is survived by his son, Dennis (Ann Erickson) Gettis; son Michael (Jean Umbarger) Gettis; five grandchildren: Jonathan Gettis, Andrew (Alicia) Gettis, Rachel (Sidd Owens) Gettis, Ronya Gettis and fiancé Giang Nguyen, and Amy (Ross) Eiden; and four great grandchildren: Keira Eiden, Kenna Eiden, Isaac Gettis, and Josie Gettis. Another great granddaughter is coming in February.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Lyle Gettis, Amy Jamtgaard, and Marlyce Larsen; infant sister, Inez Gettis; and grandson, Jeremiah Gettis.
