Cheryl “Coc” Jean Hebel (Proscovec), passed away peacefully on June 5, 2025, in Scottsdale, Arizona—just one day shy of her 78th birthday. Born on June 6, 1947, in Mason City, Iowa, she was the daughter of Jack and Beverly Proscovec, both of whom preceded her in death.
Coc was known for her strength, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. She proudly served as House Mom to the women of Kappa Alpha Theta at the University of Iowa, where she created a second home for many young women. At her core, Coc was a devoted and loving mother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her quiet sacrifices and heartfelt encouragement left lasting marks on the lives she touched.
She is survived by her children, Matthew (Kris) Hebel and Tiffani Hebel Shaw; her grandchildren, Skylar Shaw, Chase Shaw, Melissa (Tom) Forester, and Michele (Jason) Martinez; and her great-grandchildren, Cole Forester, Eric Forester, Zane Martinez, and Cecilia Martinez. She also leaves behind her sisters: Jackie Star and Kay “Bopper” Snell and several nieces and nephews.
Coc found joy in the simple things—reading a good book, tackling puzzles, or cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
In her final journey, Coc was cared for by an extraordinary group of doctors, nurses, and therapists, not just professionals, but people who embodied the very essence of true, compassionate caregiving and who became emotionally invested in her recovery. To honor this beautiful kind of caregiving, and to carry forward Coc’s legacy of love, we have established The Cheryl "Coc" Hebel True Care Legacy Fund. This fund will recognize and support healthcare heroes who provide the kind of heartfelt, patient-centered care that Coc experienced—care rooted in compassion, emotional presence, and genuine connection. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the fund, helping to ensure that more families like ours receive not just medical care, but true care.
