Mason City

Betty J. Squier, 92, of Mason City, passed away Saturday, May 18, 2024, at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 24, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City with Rev. Dan Gerrietts officiating. Burial will be at Park Cemetery in Nora Springs. 

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, May 23rd at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City and will continue one hour prior to services at the church. 

Memorials may be sent to her son, Doug Squier 1027 Thompson St., Sheffield, IA   50475. 

Betty Jean Squier, the daughter of Clayton and Tilla (Ericksen) Quam, was born December 31, 1931, in Huron, SD. As a young child, she moved with her family to Mason City and later to Nora Springs where she graduated from high school in 1950. On November 25, 1951, she was married to Wendell “Buck” Squier at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. They chose to live in Nora Springs and to this union, two sons were born, Douglas and Jay. Betty worked 30 years at Gerards as a nurse assistant, but her favorite job was being a mother. She later volunteered at Mercy Medical Center, Hospice of North Iowa, and the Opportunity Village Store. Betty enjoyed gardening, bowling, reading, playing cards, cooking, and baking.

 She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. 

Betty is survived by her son, Douglas (Lilyann) Squier of Sheffield; grandchildren, Joshua (Jay) Squier-Rainville of Minneapolis, MN, Nettie (Ruby) Torres of Fort Dodge; great-grandchildren, Tyson Squier, Nick Squier, Daniel Carrilo and Max Rainville; brothers, Clayton, Lyle and Bob Quam; sister, Donna Cooper; sisters-in-law, Sandy Schulte and LaVonne Squier; many nieces and nephews including Lorene Johnson and Pat (Bob) Martin; and extra special friends, Mona Worstein and Bette Wilson. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Buck in 2006; son, Jay in 2010; brothers, Ivan and John Quam; sisters, LeVound Bailey, Annette Duray, Carolyn King; brothers-in-law, Raleigh King, Wayne Cooper, Gary Squier, Otis Bailey and Dan Durray; and sisters-in-law, Mary, Margaret and Delores Quam.
