Anthony Duane Babcock, lifelong adventurer, professional ruck-packer, Irish-music enthusiast, Scotch appreciator, and proud U.S. Marine, reported for his final formation on January 29, 2026—exactly 45 years after he first arrived and immediately began doing things his own way. Services are pending. Burial will be held in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Born in Clarion, Iowa, to William & Angel. Anthony did a number throughout Iowa but eventually found his way to Jacksonville, North Carolina where he built a life full of grit, laughter, stubborn determination, and the occasional "hold my drink and watch this." He graduated from CWL in 1999 and wasted no time joining the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a combat veteran from 1999 to 2008. Being a Marine wasn't just something Anthony did—it was something he was, and he never missed a chance to remind people of that (subtly... or not at all subtly).
Anthony loved Irish music—especially if it was loud, emotional, and paired with a good Scotch. He found peace outdoors, whether hiking, rucking with unnecessary weight (on purpose), or just proving that comfort was optional. If it involved challenge, camaraderie, or grit, Anthony was all in.
Above all, Anthony was deeply proud of his four children: Autumn, Emorie, Athens, and Liam. They were his greatest accomplishment, his legacy, and the center of his world—even if he occasionally pretended not to hear them asking for help with homework. He was also engaged to the love of his life, Christen, since 2023, whom he adored fiercely and chose as his forever partner in this adventure of life.
Anthony is survived by his fiancée Christen; his children; his 2 grandsons; his grandmother; his sister; his stepfather; his aunt and uncles; and countless friends who were never really "friends" so much as chosen family. If you knew Anthony, you were probably claimed as family whether you agreed to it or not.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and many friends who no doubt welcomed him with open arms, a raised glass, and probably some sarcastic commentary.
Anthony leaves behind stories that will be exaggerated with time, boots that may never fully be cleaned, and a reminder to live boldly, love fiercely, and never turn down good music, good whiskey, or a chance to prove you've still got it.
Fair winds and following seas, Marine.
