Walter Sonike, 84, of Mason City, IA, died Friday, August 2, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa. A private graveside service for family and friends will be held at a later date in the Park Cemetery in Nora Springs, IA. Walter was born October 31, 1928, the son of August and Marie (Rosenstengel) Sonike, in Vaike-Maarja, Estonia where he attended grade school. He graduated high school in Germany and lived in a displaced persons camp in Germany with his mother and siblings until they came to Mason City in 1950. He voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951 and served during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1953. He graduated from both Hamilton Business College in Mason City and Iowa State University in Ames. Walter enjoyed playing the accordion and was lovingly referred to as “Big Uncle”. Walter is survived by his sister: Leili Hedrick of Nora Springs; four nephews, one niece, and great-nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jewel; sister: Milvi; brother: Aulis; and infant brothers: Heldur and Eelar.
