Walter H. Schumpp

June 4, 1914 — April 21, 2008

Walter H. Schumpp, 93, of Mason City, died peacefully in his sleep Monday, April 21, 2008.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM Thursday, April 24, 2008 at St. Josephs Catholic Church, 302 5th Street SE with Msgr. John Hemann officiating.  Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue.  A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7:00 PM.  Memorials may be directed to the Walter H. Schumpp Memorial Fund.  Walt was born June 4, 1914 in Ottosen, Iowa the son of Joseph and Dora (Buchholz) Schumpp.  He lived in Algona, Iowa from 1916 to 1929 when he moved to Clarion, Iowa.  He graduated from Clarion High School in 1932.  Walt married June Martin June 30, 1941 at St. Johns Catholic Church in Clarion.  He was a railroad telegrapher until his retirement in 1974.  Following retirement, he worked for Kelroy Plumbing and Bill Lyons Motors.  Walt kept active and on the go his entire life. He was an avid fisherman.  He loved taking care of his garden especially the tomatoes and pole beans every year.   He enjoyed listening to big band dance music.  He marched in the North Iowa Band Festival parade when he was 80 years old.  He especially loved his family.  Walt was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church and an active union member. 
 
Walt is survived by his wife of 67 years, June of Mason City, 3 daughters, Dolores Kimball of Mason City, Dorothy (Paul) Scheffelman of Madison, Wisconsin, and Barbara (Edward) Halbach of Clear Lake, grandchildren, Diane (Mark) Evans, Matthew (Allegra), Sara, and Christopher (Emily) Scheffelman, Heather and Sean Cornelius, great grandchildren, Will, Jackson, and Mallory Evans, Ella Scheffelman and Satya Scheffelman.  
 
Walt was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Regina Sheffield and Margaret Comstock and brother, Fred Schumpp
