MASON CITY ? Verna E. Schlie, 98, of 1436 N. Madison, died May 10, 2006 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday (May 13, 2006) at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. with Rev. Kathy Graves of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Hospice of North Iowa. Verna was born August 22, 1907 in Worth County, Iowa the daughter of Theodore and Emma (Nelson) Heggestad.. She attended rural schools and graduated from Northwood High School in 1925. She was baptized and confirmed at Shell Rock Church, Northwood, IA. She was united in marriage to Ernest Schlie on June 23, 1935 in Austin, Minnesota. She came to Mason City in 1938 and went to work for State Brand Creamery where she worked for 23 years until her retirement in 1967. She enjoyed croteching and made quilts for all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also liked to do things for others, gardening and liked to bowl. She was a member of the Moose Lodge and Trinity Lutheran Church. Verna is survived by her daughter, Delores Railsback of Mason City; daughter-in-law Shirley Schlie of Mason City, grandchildren, Kevin Railsback and wife Colleen of Austin, TX, Randy Schlie of Des Moines, IA, Ricky Schlie of Mason City, and Lisa Durham and husband Matt of St. Louis, MO; great-grandchildren, Nicole Viator, Samantha Sechrest, Spencer and Amanda Grarup, Brooke Durham, Sheldon Schlie, and Emmie and Colton Schlie; sisters, Helen Anderson of Orange, CA, Melba Cowan of Minnetonka, MN; sister-in-law, Hedy Heggestad of Mason City; several nieces and nephews. Verna was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ernest in 1994; son, Donald; two sisters, Hazel and Lila Haggestad; three brothers, Lloyd, Ervin and Lawrence Heggestad; one grandson, Michael and two nephews.
