Shirley L. Isacson Smith, 81, of Mason City, IA died Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, October 20, 2018 at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Ave. with Pastor Matthew Muters officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the donor’s favorite charity.

Shirley was born April 29, 1937 the daughter of Raymond and Eunice (Monkelien) Isacson on the family farm in Rolfe, Iowa. She attended Des Moines Township Country School.

On July 15, 1956 Shirley was united in marriage to Arthur L. Smith at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Rolfe, Iowa. To this union four children were born, two daughters and twin sons. After her retirement from HyVee Food Stores, she enjoyed spending time with church activities including quilting with the ladies’ group. Shirley also enjoyed cooking, baking and spending time with her family. She was an avid sports fan and was especially fond of her Nebraska Cornhuskers. Shirley knew no stranger and loved to visit and strike up a conversation with anyone anywhere.

Those thankful for having shared in Shirley’s life include her children, Joanie (Jon) Barnes, Brenda (John) Benson, Mitchell (Mary Ellen) Smith, Michael (Stacy) Smith; eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister, Judith (Virgil) Peterson.

Per Shirley’s wishes she donated her body to Mayo Clinic Anatomical Department and her gift will be used for educational purposes. Shirley was a giving person and she felt this was a way she could continue to help people.
