MASON CITY Robert LeRoy Thomas, age 52, of Mason City, died Saturday, February 13, 2010, at his home. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, (February 17, 2010) at the First Christian Church, 318 North Adams with the Rev. Margaret Hutchens of the First Christian Church, Charles City officiating. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday (February 16, 2010) at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and also one hour prior to the services Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the North Iowa Humane Society, American Cancer Society or the Lime Creek Nature Center.
Robert was born May 19, 1957 in Mason City, Iowa the son of Ralph and Iona (Bailey) Thomas. He graduated form Mason City High School in 1975 and from North Iowa Area Community College in 1977. He then attended the University of Iowa. Robert worked as a machinist and manager of Thomas Machine Company until the time of his retirement in 2006. He loved his family and especially enjoyed watching his niece and nephews grow into adults. He also enjoyed his friends, cats, nature, and followed the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Vikings.
Robert is survived by his brother, Leon Thomas and wife Mary of Mason City; sister, Barbara Colvin of Hawkeye, IA; brother, Mark Thomas and wife Tralee of Mason City; nephews, Dylan Thomas, Derek Thomas, Eric Thomas and wife Gail, and Jason Thomas; niece, Alyssa Thomas; aunts, Hazel Mae McGowan, Leona Cooperman, and Leila Young and husband LeRoy; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents, Ralph and Iona Thomas; brother-in-law, Steve Colvin; uncles, Merlin Mac McGowan, Dr. Martin Cooperman, Robert LeRoy Thomas, and Marlin Bailey; and special friend, Kathy Greenan.
