June 11, 1934 — July 1, 2016

Robert “Bob” D. Johnson, 82, of Mason City, died Friday, July 1, 2016 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. A gathering of family and friends for a time of food and fellowship will begin at 3:30 PM Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at the St. James Lutheran Church fellowship hall.

Robert D. Johnson was born June 11, 1934 the son of Oscar and Nora (Bakke) Johnson in Ruthven, Iowa. Following Bob’s junior year of high school he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving his country until his honorable discharge.

On October 20, 1956 Bob was united in marriage to Joyce Tosel in Charles City, Iowa. To this union 2 children were born.

Bob worked for Hale Phipps Motors for 18 years. He then went into business for himself at B&J Auto until his retirement.

Bob became known to many as “The Ole Boy” and loved to tell jokes and stories to all those who would listen with interest. Over the years his faith became a strong hold and his grandchildren became his blessings. To Bob it was all about the Iowa Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers, his spirit and enthusiasm for another Super Bowl victory were always top talking points. His passion for his 1955 Chrysler 300 and his meticulous polishing earned the car a spot in the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Detroit, MI.

Those thankful for having shared in Bob’s life include his wife, Joyce; one son, Doug Johnson and one daughter, Lisa Post, both of Mason City; five grandchildren, Bridget (Brent) Bowser, of Ankeny, IA, Travis Johnson, New Orleans, LA, Luke Johnson, Williamsburg, IA, Ryan Post, Des Moines, IA and Alyssa (Nathan) Dick, Madrid, IA; two great-grandchildren, Kaden Bowser (son of Bridget and Brent Bowser) and new grandson due July 12th (son of Alyssa and Nathan Dick); sisters, Arlene Cunningham, Corrine (Lyle) Butler and Carol Piippo all of Mason City.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers Gene and Virgil Johnson.
