MASON CITY, IOWA: Richard E. Munns, MD of Mason City, Iowa died Sunday (February 20, 2005) in Kansas City, Kansas. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia with Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue and continue Thursday one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church. Dr. Munns was born in Merriam, Kansas on December 16, 1917. He graduated from Shawnee Mission rural High School then received his Bachelor?s degree from Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1938. He taught school in New Hartford, Iowa where he met his wife. He married Margaret Gwendolyn Baker on September 12, 1942 to whom he remained happily married until her death on September 23, 1994. He proudly served in the U.S Army during W.W. II in the European Theater where he achieved the rank of Major. Following the war, he attended Medical School at the University of Kansas, graduating in 1950. He opened a family practice in Alden, Iowa after graduation and practiced there until the spring of 1953. He then practiced Family Medicine in The Hampton Clinic until 1974 where he had a special interest in obstetrics. He finished his professional career as Director of the Family Practice Residency Program at Mercy Hospital in Mason City from 1975 to 1989. He is survived by four sons, James R. Munns, M.D. and wife Sharlyn of Peoria, IL, Dwight B. Munns and wife Becky of Crosby, MN, Michael Kent Munns of Mason City, Stephen W. Munns, M.D. of Prairie Village, KS; grandchildren, Stephanie, Justin, Jeffrey, Timothy, Molly and Alex; great grandchildren, Jacob, Matthew, Isaac and Michael; former daughter-in-laws, Carol Munns and Rachelle Munns. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Gwendolyn Munns; two brothers, Art and Edward, sister, Eva.
