Mason City ? Richard D. Bergan, 67 of Mason City died Saturday, December 31, 2005 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Avenue with Rev. Jon Seda of Holy Family Catholic Church officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4 ? 7 PM on Tuesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in Elmwood ? St. Joseph Cemetery with full military rites at the graveside conducted by the Mason City Veteran?s Memorial Association. Memorials may be directed to the Richard D. Bergan Memorial Fund. Richard D. Bergan was born on June 26, 1938 the son of Lloyd and Lila (Behm) Bergan in Mason City. While still in high school Richard enlisted in the National Guard, he served in the guard until he graduated from Mason City High School in 1956 when he enlisted in the United States Navy. Richard served in the Navy from 1956 ? 1961 when he was honorably discharged. Following his service in the Navy he re-enlisted in the National Guard and did so until 1998 when he retired achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class. From 1993 until 1998 he served on the Army Retired Reserve until officially retiring from the United States Army. While serving in the Guard he was activated to Sioux City to assist with the recovery and identification of remains from the Flight 232 crash. In all Richard devoted 28 years of his life to the military. Richard was united in marriage to Janice Christensen on November 11, 1956 in Mason City. Richard owned his own gas station in Mason City for a time while he was working for Decker?s. He worked at Decker?s from 1968 ? 1975 and 1979 ? 1990. Richard also worked for Winnebago Industries for a short time from 1975 ? 1979 and worked part-time as a roofer. He was known as an avid fisherman, Richard would fish anywhere, anytime no matter the weather or time of year. He loved to talk to people, anyone, which led him into selling Miracle Maid cookware in peoples home for a time. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Janice Bergan of Mason City; their children, Deborah Bostrom and husband Brett of Rosemont, Minnesota, Barbara King and special friend Phil Vanness of Mason City, Mike Bergan and wife Laura of Clear Lake, David Bergan and wife Jane of Mason City, Scott Bergan and wife Lorena of Mason City and Douglas Bergan also of Mason City; grandchildren, Jeff, Brent and Travis Robinette, Kirsten and Karna Bostrom, Jacob and Jared (Cinder) King and Jessica King, Sarah, Amanda, Emily and Elizabeth Bergan, Hannah, Aaron and Madeline Bergan, Bradly, Craig and Kaitlin Bergan. He is also survived by his brothers, Larry Bergan and wife Sue and James Bergan both of Mason City as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Lila Bergan and one brother in infancy. Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements (641)423-0924.
