Noreen H. Barkema, 82, formerly of Mason City, died Monday, (November 7, 2005) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond. Graveside Services will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday (November 10, 2005) at the Amsterdam Cemetery in Goodell, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa. Noreen H. Barkema was born January 15, 1922 in Forest City, Iowa the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter McMahon. She graduated from Crystal Lake High School and then attended the Iowa State Teacher?s College receiving her B.A. degree in teaching. Noreen married Leo W. Barkema in 1942 in Belmond, Iowa. They were married for 60 years until his death in June of this year. She further continued her education at Drake University receiving her M.A. degree in Education. She began her teaching career in rural Hancock county teaching in rural schools before teaching in Klemme, Iowa for a few years before coming to Mason City in 1961. She taught elementary school in the Mason City School District before becoming the Head Librarian for the elementary schools in Mason City. Noreen enjoyed teaching and her students and was a very dedicated teacher, who was always there for her students. She enjoyed traveling and extensively traveled the United States, she also looked forward to spending the winters with her late husband Leo, in Sun City, Arizona. Noreen is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo; sister, Jean McMahon; and brother, Jim McMahon.
