HOLTS SUMMIT, MO. Mildred Gerard, 99, of Holts Summit, MO. formerly of Mason City, died Thursday, October 22, 2009, at the Summit Villa in Holts Summit, MO. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday (October 30, 2009) at the First United Methodist Church Wayside Chapel, 119 S. Georgia, with Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM 6:00 PM on Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial may be directed to the Mildred Gerard memorial fund in care of the family.
Mildred was born on August 11, 1910, in Tama, IA, the daughter of Everett and Lavina (Everett) Kluck. The family moved to Mason City in 1911. She was educated in the public schools of Mason City and then attended North Iowa University in Cedar Falls, graduating in 1933 with a BA degree in Physical Education. Returning to Mason City, she taught Physical Education and Swimming at the local Y.W.C.A. for several years. During the following years, she taught in several elementary grades and secondary schools and both high schools. She retired in 1970. She married Earl Gerard on June 5, 1937, who at the time was also a teacher in the Mason City School system. Three children were born to them Patricia Waddell, Ronald Gerard, and Vicky Elwood. She was a 60 + year member of the First United Methodist Church, joining in 1926. She was a 50 year member of Unity Chapter of the Eastern Star. She served as Worthy Matron in 1951. Since that time, shes been a member of the Star and the Past Matrons Club, serving as its President for a year. She was also a founding member of the Cole Chunks, a Mason City womens softball team and was inducted into the River City Baseball Hall of Fame. Mildred enjoyed sewing and made many quilts for her family and friends.
Mildred is survived by two daughters: Vicky Elwood of Jefferson City, MO and Pat Waddell of DeKalb, IL; one daughter-in-law: Kris Gerard-Jacobs of Cloquet, MN; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Earl; her son: Ronald; and her sister: Gertrude Eimers.
