Mary M. Smith, 92, of Clear Lake, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday, January 5, 2008 at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake. Memorial services will be held 1:00 PM, Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church, 100 South Pierce Ave., with the Rev. Paul Collier officiating. A gathering of friends and family will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Mary M. Smith memorial fund. Mary was born June 6, 1915 in Miden, Louisiana, the daughter of James F. and Ida M. (Andrew) Maxwell. She graduated from Miden High School in 1932. She then attended the University of Alabama and graduated in 1936 with a Bachelor?s Degree in Education. After college she worked and lived in South Carolina and Madison, Wisconsin before moving to Mason City in the late 1940?s. She was married to Rodger B. Smith on September 22, 1945 in Madison, Wisconsin. Mary was an active volunteer for the Girl Scouts, where she was a Field Staff Director for many years. She loved hiking and camping, bird watching and identifying wildflowers. She was a member of the Girl Scouts of U.S.A., P.E.O. (KX), and the Monday Club. She was also very active in the Lime Creek Nature Center, where she served on the 1st Advisory Committee and also as a board member for many years. She was also a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mason City. Mary is survived by her two sons, David M. Smith of Clear Lake, Ronald K. Smith and wife Dawn of Chesterfield, Virginia; grandchildren, Nathan M. Smith, Jeffrey R. Smith, Hollie K. ?Cory? Smith and Brittney A. Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. Rodger B. Smith in 1996; daughter-in-law, Pamela Smith; sisters, Dorothy Maxwell, Sarah Woodruff; brothers, James F. Maxwell, and Joseph A. Maxwell.
