Mary E. Humphrey

Mary Elizabeth Giere Humphrey, 89, of Mason City, died Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, June 6 at 2:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City, where she was a long time member with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. The family will be available to greet friends at the church beginning at 1:00 p.m. The cremated remains will be interred at Memorial Park Cemetery in a private ceremony. Memorials may be made to the family for nursing scholarships, or to Hospice of North Iowa or Trinity Lutheran Church.

Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a friend to many.

She was born in Mason City to Mark and Ethel Giere February 5,1921, graduated from Mason City High School in 1939, graduated from Mason City Community College (NIACC) in 1941 and married Lyle Humphrey April 2, 1943. Lyle died last September.

Mary is survived by her sister, Bette Bass, Northfield, MN, and three daughters, Jan (Charles) Hall, Prior Lake, MN; Sue (Bob) Simons, Clive, IA and Julie (Rolf) Aronsen, Mason City.

Also surviving are grandchildren Jeff (Aubrey Lee) Hall, St. Paul, MN; Andy (Rachael) Hall, San Diego, CA; Matt (Dana Carlson) Simons, Brooklyn, NY; Steve Simons, San Diego, CA; Erica (Chris Axiotis) Aronsen, Des Moines, and Nick (Sarah) Aronsen, Mason City, and great-grandchildren Benjamin Aronsen and Faye Simons.

She worked as a paraprofessional at McKinley School for eight years.

Mary had a fondness for Norway and anything Norwegian. She loved experiencing five trips to the Mother land, her membership in the Sons of Norway, attending Hallinglag events throughout the midwest and making lefsa and kringla for the family and for the church bazaars. She was an active member and past president of her church circle, the Valeda Study Club and her beloved Sewing Club.
