Leonard Carl Markwardt Jr., 68, of Sheffield, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at his home. Carls wishes were to be cremated. Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Carl Markwardt memorial fund, in care of the family. Carl was born May 7, 1943, in Franklin County, IA, the son of Leonard Carl Sr. and Irene Mae (Emhoff) Markwardt. In 1961, he graduated from Franklin Consolidated High School in Latimer, IA. Over the years, Carl worked for Morel Jewelers and Otto Schmeider Jewelers, which he co-owned with Mr. Schmeider. He later began selling jewelry on the road for A. Jaffe & Sons. After returning to Iowa, he ran Studebakers Bar in Sheffield before retiring in 2005. Following retirement, Carl did clock repair from his home. He enjoyed working on challenging clocks and would receive work from out of state. Carl also enjoyed golfing and bird watching. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Carl is survived by one daughter: Tammy Hallock and husband Mike of Leola, PA, and their children: Megan McComsey and Scott McComsey, and three great grandchildren: Jayden, Leela, and Amya; two sons: Cory Markwardt and wife Jackie of Mason City, and their son, Christopher; Travis Gardner and wife Angela of North Liberty, IA, and their daughter, Taylor; one brother: Ronald Nicholson of Bisbee, AZ; three sisters: Paulette Foss and husband Dennis of Sheffield; Patricia Smit of Sheffield, Cathy Stevens and husband Ken of Mason City; special family friend: Donna Bull and husband Mike of Tucson, AZ. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother: William Bill Nicholson; his grandparents: Lester and Elizabeth Markwardt and William and Ethel Emhoff; and brother-in-law: Donald Smit.
