LaVerne ?Ed? Scheffel, 77 of 22 Winnebago Court, died Friday, March 9, 2007 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit after a short battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held 1:30 PM Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Pastor Tom Healey, Chaplain, Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 6:00 PM Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the LaVerne Scheffel Memorial Fund. Ed was born March 19, 1929 in Nora Springs, Iowa, the son of Les and Velma (Scheffel) Barker. Shortly after graduation from Nora Springs High School, Ed started working at Northwestern States Portland Cement Company. He was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Korean Conflict. After returning from the service, he continued a 39 ½ year career at Northwestern States Portland Cement Company retiring in 1986. Ed was united in marriage to Dorothy Best at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on May 23, 1953. To this union, one daughter was born. Ed was a devoted husband, loving father and proud grandfather. Ed was also an avid Hawkeye, Viking and Nascar fan. He enjoyed playing cards, Bingo, going out to eat, going to stock car races, watching his granddaughter?s dog Cuddles, and most of all watching his granddaughter play basketball and softball for the Mason City Mohawks. Ed is survived by one daughter, Lori Beatty and husband Kent of Mason City; one granddaughter, Whitney Beatty of Mason City; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Mary Best of Rockwell; one sister-in-law, Jo Ann Best of Clear Lake; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy; his parents; one brother-in-law, Roger Best; one sister-in-law, Velma Dawson; and one nephew, Dale Best.
