Katherine ?Kay? L. Strom, 98, of Mason City, died Saturday, September 29, 2007 at Good Shepherd Health Center. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 2, 2007, at First United Methodist Church, 119 South Georgia with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held 5-7 PM Monday, October 1, 2007 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave and also one hour prior at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church, NIACC Foundation or the donor?s Choice. Katherine was born July 23, 1909 in Conrad, IA, the daughter of Dr. Robert T. and Lefayette (Hostetter) Spain. Her mother passed away when she was five years old and her father then married Lillis V. Wilson, who then became her loving mother. Katherine graduated from Conrad High School and received her B.S. degree in Business from the University of Iowa in 1933, and has been a proud and devoted supporter of Iowa Athletics. While in college she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. After graduation she was an accountant for the Farmer?s Mutual Telephone Co. in Nora Springs. On June 4, 1943 she married John W. Strom in Conrad, IA and when he returned from the service they lived in Nora Springs, until moving to Mason City in 1952. She enjoyed golfing and tennis and played golf with friends and family until three years ago. Family was an important part of Kay?s life especially her grandchildren who she was extremely proud of. Katherine was a charter member and 50 year member of Chapter CM TTT, Acension chapter 158 of Order of Eastern Star, Chapter KW P.E.O., Ruth Circle, and the First United Methodist Church. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Robert Strom and Linda Schluter of Mason City, Stephen Strom and wife Debra of Garner, IA; grandchildren, Travis Strom of Smithville, MO; Sarah Kieschnick and husband Brian of Abilene, TX and children, Drew and Nate, Katherine Gill and husband Bud of Kellar, TX and children Cody and Cooper, and Ryan Strom of Garner, IA; step-granddaughter, Jessica Shull and children, Makayla and Ashton of Garner, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Strom in 1973. The Family would like to express a special thanks to the staff at Good Shepherd Health Center for their loving care and support in the last two years and also to Hospice of North Iowa in Kay?s last few days.
