Karen L. Barrett, 62, of 29 S. Vermont Ave., Mason City, died Wednesday (Dec.15, 2010) at her home. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 20, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. with the Rev. Randy Nielsen of Galilean Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, officiating. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa. Karen was born Dec. 21, 1947, in Mount Carmel, Ill., the daughter of Harold and Edna (Elsie) Wicklin. She graduated in 1966 from Lindblom High School in Chicago, Ill., and also attended junior college in Chicago. After her schooling, Karen taught beauty/cosmetology classes. On Dec. 4, 1970, Karen married David Barrett in Chicago. She worked as a receptionist at the Clear Lake Telephone Co. for 10 years and the Comfort Inn before retiring in 2009 due to health issues. Karen was a founding member of Galilean Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. Karen lived in Clear Lake for more than 20 years and loved watching the fireworks with her family and friends during the 4th of July celebrations. In 2009, she moved to Mason City. Karen enjoyed baking cookies and fudge. She was an avid sports fan, and loved to cheer on the Chicago teams. Spending time with her family and close friends was a passion of hers, especially her grandchildren and grandpuppy they gave her great joy. Karen is survived by her husband of 40 years: Dave Barrett of Mason City; one son: Doug Barrett and wife Mariah of Mason City; one daughter: Kara Barrett of Mason City; three grandchildren: Maura, Emma and Jack; two brothers: Victor McClain and wife Margaret of Illinois, and Charles Byrd and wife Marion of New Jersey. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
