Joyce Hopp, daughter of Albert and Helen (Curtis) Smith, was born on August 7, 1937 in Cresco, Iowa. She graduated from Ridgeway High School as the valedictorian of the Class of 1955. Joyce attended Luther College for a year before moving to Cedar Falls where she attended Iowa State Teachers College. It was there that she met fellow student Harold Hopp. They were united in marriage on August 10, 1958 at the Wesley Foundation in Cedar Falls. Following Harold’s graduation, they moved to Mason City where Harold began his teaching career. Joyce tended to her growing family while finishing her teaching degree, fulfilling a promise she made to her dad.

Joyce spent her entire married life in Mason City. She worked for the Mason City schools and later at A.C. Nielson. She volunteered for many organizations over the years including the North Iowa Girl Scout Council, Hospice of North Iowa, Disabled American Veterans, Friends of the Cannonball 457 and the public library genealogy room. She was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

In later years, Joyce was a faithful member of the Ironhouse Gym and enjoyed long walks at the Lime Creek Nature Center with good friend Barb Hasfjord. Above all, Joyce loved spending time with her grandchildren, taking them to MacNider Art Museum, the public library, parks, and attending as many of their activities as possible.

Joyce will be deeply missed by her husband of sixty years Harold Hopp of Mason City; daughters Brenda (Doug) Arjes of Kansas City, MO, Mona (Doug) Follmann of Stanhope, IA, and Dana (Wade) Torkelson of Forest City, IA; grandchildren Sam (Fiona) Arjes, Michael Arjes and Reese Walley of Kansas City, MO, Andrew (Kylie) Follmann of Ankeny, Iowa, Nicole Follmann of Brooklyn, NY and Ethan Torkelson of Iowa City, IA; and great-grandsons Huxley Arjes and Quincy Follmann. She is also survived by sisters Jean Childers, of Pembroke, MA and June (Larry) Belz of Cedar Falls, IA as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
