John William Smith, 85, of Mason City, died Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Memorial services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, April 7, 2007 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, with the Rev. Charles Westendorf officiating. There will be no visitation. According to his wishes, John will be cremated. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center, IA. Memorials may be directed to the John Smith Memorial Fund. John was born August 24, 1921 in Buffalo Center, the son of John W. and Grace (Dorenbusch) Smith. He was married to Hermina Westendorf on August 2, 1945 in Forest City, IA. John served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Europe with the 4th Infantry Division, Field Artillery. John enjoyed traveling. John is survived by his wife, Hermina Smith of Mason City; one son: Mark Smith and his wife Barbara of Fort Belvoir, Virginia; one brother: Billie Smith and his wife Elsie of Buffalo Center; one sister: Dorothy Heitland of Buffalo Center; two grandsons: Nathan Smith and his wife Lori of Wray, Colorado, and Ryan Smith of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three step grandchildren: Jamie, Cory, and Andrea; three great grandchildren: Morgan, Hagan, and Kaylan; two step great grandchildren: Mae Francis and Samuel; two sisters in law: Bonna Matson and husband Richard, Mason City, and Tillie Sporaa of Aurora, Colorado; brother in law: Henry Westendorf of Rockford, IL. John was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Marian and Margaret.
