John A. Schaer, 58, of 17698 Vine Avenue, died Tuesday, August 30, 2005 from injuries sustained in a truck and train accident in Clyman, Wisconsin. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 4th St. SE with Pastor Paul C. Nelson officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. A Moose Lodge service will be held at 7:00 PM. Memorials may be given to the John A. Schaer Memorial Fund. John was born June 11, 1947 in Mason City the son of Harold and Bertha (Cory) Schaer. John was baptized and confirmed at St. James Lutheran Church. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1966. John married Carren Gotfried August 5, 1973 at St. James. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War and was discharged in 1970. John returned to Mason City and in September of 1973 went to work for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He was currently employed by the Union Pacific Railroad as a long haul driver. John was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Moose Lodge and the VFW. He enjoyed stock car racing, camping and spending time with his grandson, JJ. John is survived by his wife, Carren of Mason City; daughter, Robin Hughes and husband David of Clear Lake; grandson, Jason ?JJ? Hughes of Clear Lake; brothers, Don Schaer and wife Sharon of Branson, MO, Harold ?Butch? Schaer and special friend Kay Marie Stanich of Rochester; sisters, Leota Sears and husband John of Mason City, Betty Hoffman of Mason City, Vivian Hogan of Osage; many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. John was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents and nephew, Scott Olson.
