Jack Nutton, 92, of Mason City, died Thursday, June 9, 2011 at the Good Shepherd Health Center. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Monday, June 13, 2011 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Rev. Jim Stiles, First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 PM Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Jack was born May 24, 1919 in Mason City the son of Charles and Emily (Tachovska) Nutton. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1938 and Mason City Junior College in 1940. Jack served in the US Army from December of 1941 until his discharge in 1945. He served mainly in the South Pacific. When the Japanese invaded New Guinea, American troops were sent there to defend the island. Jack was there for two years participating in the Battle of Buna. He became ill will malaria and was sent to Australia to recover. Upon returning to the states he was stationed in Florida. While there, President Roosevelt died and Jack served with the honor guard as the president was taken by railroad back to Washington, DC. Following his discharge, Jack returned to Mason City where he continued his employment with Deckers working as a cashier until his retirement in 1974 when the Armour Co. terminated all non-union employees age 55 and older. Jack married Frances Hill July 19, 1952 in Mason City. In his younger days, he excelled in tennis and golf. One year he was the city champion in tennis. Upon retirement, Jack and Fran enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. There travels also included Mexico, Canada, from Quebec to Vancouver, England, and France, including 10 days in Paris. Jack was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and the VFW.

He is survived by his wife, Frances of Mason City, daughter Janis Fletcher and husband Michael of Pebble Beach, CA; 2 grandchildren, Katelyn and John Fletcher; 2 step grandchildren, Jenna and Ashley.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
