Hyman Levinson, 98, of 9141 SW 55th Street, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, died at home Saturday, November 18, 2006 in his sleep. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, with Michael Libbie officiating. A time of fellowship will be at the Adas Israel Synagogue, 620 N. Adams Avenue, Mason City, following the graveside services. Hy was born on July 3, 1908. He graduated from Columbia University in New York with a degree in ancient history and found work during the depression in the hotel industry. He owned and operated the Roseville Hotel in the Catskill mountains and the Cardozo in Florida. Hy?s twin passions were rare books and music and he passed his love of music onto his sons, Mark and Gary. Hy reached the age of 98 through his adherence to an unusually strict personal discipline. Hy walked miles every day until his last few years and carefully restricted his diet to lean meats and vegetables. Hy was always willing to overlook the health risks of ice cream, however, and he kept laughter in his life as a way to connect with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Esta Levinson of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; 3 sons, Dr. Mark Levinson and wife Lois of Englewood, CO., Dr. Gary Levinson and wife Jackie Armstrong of mason City, IA and son Jonathan Levinson of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; 4 grandchildren, Elana, Jacob and Ben Levinson of Mason City, and Dan Levinson of Englewood, CO. Hy was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Rose Levinson formerly of St. Petersberg, Russia, then New York, and his first wife Yetta Levinson.
