MASON CITY - Herbert Oscar Dahl, 82, beloved husband and father, died peacefully at home on Saturday, August 13, 2011, surrounded by his family. Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17, 2011, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 North Pennsylvania, with Rev. James M. Magelssen officiating and Herbs son Reverend Daniel Dahl preaching. Inurnment will be held in Elmwood - St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Herb was born on November 21, 1928 in Eveleth, MN to Selma and Oscar Dahl. He joined the Army in 1946 and served a year in Japan. He attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis where he learned drafting. Upon graduation he moved to Mason City, IA where he worked at the Mason City Millwork Co. for 40 years, retiring as Vice President.

On June 2, 1951 he was united in marriage to Peggy Breckel at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. They were blessed with eight children.

Herb was a faithful servant to the Lord, joining Trinity Lutheran Church in 1950, was on the board at the Good Shepherd, was president of Trinity Lutheran Church, and served on numerous other committees and boards over the years. He was a devoted husband and loving and caring father and grandfather who had the rare talent of making each and every member of his family feel special and important. He read his favorite Psalm
100 at Sunday family dinners and the Christmas Story every Christmas Eve to his children and then to his grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, brother, and brothers wife, and took his family on many vacations full of laughter and long discussions. He was a good friend. He enjoyed his fishing trips to Minnesota and monthly potlucks with his longtime friends and spending time with his morning coffee group. He was an avid reader, persistently studying the Bible, theology, and philosophy, was skilled at carpentry and enjoyed working on home projects. His humor and kindness to all will always be remembered and missed.

He is survived by wife of 60 years Peggy, and eight children: Reverend Daniel (Denise) Dahl; Julie (Lance) Soliah; Ellen Slothouber; Barb (Wade) Houg; Bob Dahl; Janice (Patrick) McGowan; Karen (Col Drew MD) Kosmowski; and Diane (Mike) Fitzgerald. Also surviving are his 19 grandchildren and great grandson: Nina (Erik) McMichael and great grandson Logan; James (Rachel), John, Kristin, and Matt Soliah; Stefanie and Nichole Slothouber; Meagan, Michael, Lauren, and Kaitlyn Houg; Sean, Kelly, James, Amanda, and Emily McGowan; Zach Ibbotson and Nicholas and Luda Kosmowski. And his siblings Vernon (Noel) Dahl and Judy Lanari.

He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings Arthur and Gladys Dahl; and great grandson Noah Lucas Slothouber.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
