Helen (Della) Elizabeth (Garcia) Hugi of 1523 North Adams died Thursday, August 12, 2004 at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City. Funeral services for Helen will be held 10:30 A.M., on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 North Pennsylvania Avenue with the Rev. Donald Simmonds officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Avenue. A Scriptural Wake and Rosary Service will be held at 7:00 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home conducted by Rev. Michael Podhajsky of St. Joseph?s Catholic Church. Memorials may be directed to the Helen E. Hugi Memorial Fund. Helen was born January 1, 1923 at Lehigh Row in Mason City the second child to John and Jessie (Orozco) Garcia. She was baptized at Immaculate Conception Church and educated in the Mason City schools. At the age of fifteen she moved with her family to the Historic Powder Street Area. On November 27, 1942 at the age of 19 Helen married Nick J. Kantaris and to this union three sons were born, that marriage ended in 1966. On December 15, 1967 Helen married Eugene (Geno) C. Hugi at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. After almost eighteen years of marriage, living in the B & O District Geno died on December 10, 1986. Helen worked for 29 years at the Mason City Tent & Awning and then seven years at Risto until her retirement in 1994. Sewing was always a passion that she truly enjoyed to share with her family and friends. In addition to the many things she made at home, Helen was very active in the Trinity Lutheran Quilters, making many quilts for charities with her friends. Almost all her quilts, knitted and crocheted crafts were given away by her to the delight of those who received them. She gave of herself unselfishly to everyone and will be deeply missed by all. Among the family members who will cherish her memories are her sons: Nick J. Kantaris and the late Connie R. of Mason City, John M. Kantaris and wife Dorothy A. of North Ft. Meyers, Florida, Tom P. Kantaris and wife Tonya L. of Mason City; Step-children, Annette Johnson and husband Buster of Spring Valley, Minnesota; Julie Sanchez and husband Joe of Mason City; Leon Hugi and wife Denise of Mason City, Steve Hugi of Florence, Colorado, Hugh Hugi and wife Roberta of Mason City; eleven grandchildren, Mike Kantaris, Nancy Linderman, Angela Carlson, Debbie Ewing, Kaitlin Kantaris, Nikki Cobb, Kristen Petty, John Kantaris, Skylar, Spencer and Taryn Kantaris; fourteen step-grandchildren, Joshua, Luke, Scott, Jay and Rusty Johnson, Chad and Troy Sanchez, Erica Stokes, JeanRose, Jess and Alex Hugi, Miguel Perez, Stephanie and Christina Hugi; eight great grandchildren, Steven and Vanessa Linderman, Madison and Jordon Petty, Alec and Shae Glidden, Nikko McPherren and Cooper Cobb; ten step-great grandchildren, Cole and Megan Johnson, Justice Johnson, Mitchell and Monte Johnson, Jayson Johnson, Giana and Nicholas Sanchez, Antonio and Michael Perez; one sister, Mary Rick and husband Lewis of Mason City; one brother, Frank Garcia and wife Chloe of Mason City; sisters-in-law, Sharon Garcia of Iowa Falls and Jan Garcia of Mason City; special friends, Dennis and Nancy Nonnweiler of Mason City and numerous Nieces, Nephews and dear friends. Those waiting to greet Helen in heaven are her husband Gene; parents, John and Jessie; brothers, Joe, John, Ray and infant brother Augustine Garcia; paternal grandparents, Dionisio and Ponsiana (Chavez) Garcia; maternal grandparents, William and Candleria Orozco; aunt, Annitta Orozco and uncle, Tibercio Orozco; father and mother-in-law, Clarence and Harriet Hugi, brothers-in-law, Earl Hugi and Karl Juergens.
