Harlan A. Nuehring

August 12, 1927 — July 21, 2016

Harlan A. Nuehring, 88, of Mason City, died Thursday, July 21, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 25, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City with the Rev. Steve Hansen officiating. Burial will take place at the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme with military honors conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Ave, Mason City.

Harlan was born August 12, 1927 the son of Alma (Born) and Fred Nuehring and came from a large family. He graduated from Klemme High School in 1945. He was an MP in the Army from 1945-1947. Following his discharge from the Army, he married Carol Fox from Britt in 1948 and they lived in Klemme for a while. To this union, three daughters were born.

Harlan drove truck for Lloyd Lau until they started farming in March, 1949. His farming career started on a 160 acre farm 2½ mile south of Klemme where he farmed for 27 years.

Besides farming, Harlan drove school bus for the Klemme school district for 12 years, worked on grain trains in Klemme for 5 years, sampled corn in grain bins for the ASC office in Garner for 6 years, helped to run the 4-H food stand for several years during the Hancock Co. Fair, worked for Garner Ready Mix for 20 years and drove cars for Auto Edge and Community Motors for 12 years in Mason City. He was a member at Klemme’s United Church of Christ in Klemme and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City.

Harlan married Iona Christians on October 6, 1979 in Klemme. They lived in rural Garner for several years and eventually moved to Mason City in 1991. Harlan and Iona went south to Weslaco, Texas for the winter for 30 years and he enjoyed golfing, bowling and playing cards with friends in the Siesta Village Mobile Home Park. He took great pride in his lawn and landscape around their Mason City home and watching traffic from his driveway. He went every weekday morning to have coffee with the guys and enjoyed watching ball games on TV.

Harlan is survived by his wife, Iona, of Mason City, two daughters, Pat (Rick) Anderson of Lenexa, Kansas and Donna (Doug) Tiedeman of Mason City, four grandchildren, Jason Herring of Cedar Rapids, Lindsay (Kenneth) George of Joliet, IL, Brian (Jennifer) Tiedeman of St. Paul, MN and Sarah (Brendan) Kelley of Iowa City, two great-granddaughters, Abigail and Annabel George of Joliet, Il. Also, surviving are eleven step-grandchildren, Yvette Cohn and Richard Anderson, Sara, Stephanie, Brittney, Brianna, Ashlee, Iveree, Brady, Andy, Luke and eight step-great grandchildren.

Harlan has one sister, Charlotte Ring of Mason City.

Harlan was blessed with step-children and they are Greg Christians (Cheryl) of Mason City, Patty Scott of Cedar Falls, Beth (Jamie) Schmidt of Garner and Beth Christians of Ankeny.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one daughter, Peggy Herring and three step-sons, Randall, Charles and Mark Christians.
