Flora Karin (Anderson) Janssen

April 24, 1924 — April 12, 2015

Flora Karin (Anderson) Janssen, 90, was born in Mason City, Iowa in 1924 to Henry and Tina (Zorn) Anderson. She attended schools in Mason City and graduated in 1943 from Mason City High School. She attended the University of Iowa for a time on an art scholarship. The Lord took her to be with Him on April 12, 2015. In 1945 Flora married Roy Janssen and they were stationed in Puerto Rico while Roy was in the army. After Roy’s honorable discharge from the service, they moved back to the family farm in Goodell. Three children were born while living on the Goodell farm, Gary, Jay, and Janna. In 1960, Roy and Flora moved their family to a farm northeast of Rockwell. They share cropped, raised grain and cattle and lived on this farm until 1968, when they purchased farmland about a mile north and east. Here they managed a farm operation and raised corn, soybeans, and hogs. Throughout their fifty one years of marriage, Flora spent time in the garden harvesting and canning vegetables. Her children remember her creative dishes and many ways of using leftovers. She took sculpture classes and did oil, charcoal, and watercolor painting. She and Roy also enjoyed attending class reunions and making yearly camping trips to the Iowa State Fair. For a time after retirement they also made winter trips to Florida, Texas, and Kansas. After Roy’s death, Flora chose to move back to Mason City. During these years she had many fond acquaintances and spent time going about the city and taking occasional road trips to the casino. During her later years she enjoyed collecting Betty Boop memorabilia and watching “Dancing With the Stars”. One would often catch her doing the two step while at the care center as she listened to those volunteers that provided music there. Those close to her, fondly remember her “nut house” song. Flora was preceded in death by husband, Roy; son, Gary; brother, Emerson; brother in law, Lester Nuehring; parents, Henry and Tina; Janssen- side brothers and sister in law: Merle Janssen and Paul and Leona Givens. Living family members include: Mary Beth Janssen, Jay Janssen, DVM., Janet Janssen, Doug and Janna Bram; Grandchildren: Jason Alan (Renee) Janssen, Kyle Janssen, Mary Janssen, Vivienne Janssen, Jennifer (Dan) Jungling, Kylie Jungling, Jordyn Jungling, Lewis (Christy) Bram, Anna Bram, Elijah Bram, Abby Bram, Annie Bram, Frank Barragan, Jamie (Brett) Humphrey, Mikayla Humphrey, Jason William Janssen and Jenna Janssen; Siblings: Marjory Nuehring, Ellen Anderson, Calvin (Virginia) Anderson, and Henry ( Shirley) Anderson. Many dear cousins, nieces and nephews also survive Flora. Janssen-side sisters and brother in law: Faye and Wayne Irelan and Joan Janssen. We also wish to include those of her Heritage Care Center ‘’family’’ that loved her like their own. Flora’s kids and grandkids are so very grateful for the wonderful care and comfort provided. Each of you are a true blessing. It was Flora’s wishes to keep final services simple. She chose to be cremated. Memorial gifts may be sent to: North Iowa Christian School, 811 North Kentucky Avenue, Mason City, Iowa. Graveside services will be at 1:00 pm Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Rockwell Cemetery in Rockwell, Iowa. A come and go food with fellowship get-together will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. after graveside services at the Village Court Family Restaurant, 687 South Taft Avenue in Mason City. We would like to share one of Flora’s favorite Psalms: Psalm 23--- (A Psalm of David) The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” She found comfort in these words. Love to our Mom, Grandma, and Friend.
