December 30, 1912 — February 10, 2016

ROCKWELL: Esther L. Starr, 103, of Mason City, died Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home. Graveside services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, February 13, 2016 at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City with Pastor Chuck Kelsey, First Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or the Humane Society of North Iowa.

Esther was born December 30, 1912 in Newkirk, Iowa the daughter of Cornelius and Ella (Hoeven) Idema. She graduated from Iowa City High School and the University of Iowa. Esther married Elmer E. Starr December 27, 1939 in Olathe, Kansas. Prior to moving to Mason City in 1946, Esther taught Physical Education in Woodbine and Estherville, Iowa, Owatonna, Minnesota and Green Bay, Wisconsin. Esther taught 15 years at Mason City High School, retiring in 1973. She was a long time member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Esther is survived by 2 grandsons, Travis (Brandy) Starr of Rockwell and Casey Starr of New Orleans, LA; 3 great grandchildren, Matthew Star, Catlin Starr and Evan Star; daughter-in-law, Jackie Starr of Mason City and a number of nieces and nephews.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elmer; son, David and 2 brothers.
