Edwin “Ed” P. Meyer, 79, of Mason City, died Sunday, February 2, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa with his wife and family by his side following a short bout with cancer. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Friday, February 7, 2014 at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 4th Street SE with Pastor Jeni Bohls officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Association. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue and continue at the church on Friday one hour before services. Memorials may be directed to the Ed Meyer Memorial Fund. Ed was born September 21, 1934 in Engadine, Michigan the son of Philip and Amalia (Krause) Meyer. Ed grew up on a farm near Engadine. He entered the US Army in 1957 and was stationed at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona. On October 10, 1959 he married Donna Muhlstein at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City, Iowa. Ed and Donna lived in Mason City in the home Ed built for his family in 1962. Ed worked at Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Manufacturing Plant for 25 years advancing to Plant Production Manager. He enjoyed his job and over the years his three children and numerous nephews spent summers working for him. He retired in 1991 when the plant closed. After retiring, he started Ed Meyer’s Construction. He spent the next 22 years remodeling many homes and businesses throughout North Iowa. Ed was an avid deer hunter and returned to Upper Michigan every year to his hunting cabin with son Todd, brother-in-law Chuck Harris, and good friend Tim Lichman. Ed loved spending time with his wife Donna and winters together in Mesa, Arizona starting in 1989. Ed enjoyed walking, golfing, cheering for the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Tigers, remodeling his friend’s trailers, and traveling with Donna. Ed loved spending time with his nine grandchildren attending many of their sporting and school events. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. His beautiful blue eyes will be forever missed by his family. Ed is survived by his wife of 54 years, Donna Meyer of Mason City; son, Todd (Charissa) Meyer and grandson Alex of Mason City; daughter, Traci (Michael) Krause and grandsons Jackson, Harrison, and Tyler of Plymouth, Minnesota; son, Tom Meyer and granddaughters Elizabeth, Madison, Hillary, Kaylee, and grandson, Carter of Mason City; 2 sisters, Lydia Markwart of Detroit, Michigan, Mary (Henry) Matthai of Portland, Michigan; 2 brothers, Bob (Cara) Meyer of Osage, and Erwin (Fran) Meyer of Ridgefield, Washington; many nieces, nephews, and good friends. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Al; sisters, Katie Blake, Rose Beisel, and Esther Fuller; mother and father-in-law, Walter and Lydia Muhlstein; brother-in-law, Don Muhlstein.
