Edna Marie Saunders

February 26, 1913 — July 17, 2008

MASON CITY: Edna Marie Saunders, 95, of 17396 Kingbird Avenue, died Thursday, July 17, 2008 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.  A funeral mass will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday at St. Josephs Catholic Church, 302 5th Street SE with Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka and Rev. Craig E. Steimel officiating.  Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue.  A scriptural wake service will be held at 7:00 PM at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Josephs Catholic Church.  Edna was born February 26, 1913 in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of Roy and Marie (Smith) McAlister.  Her family moved to Mason City when Edna was an infant and where she has resided most of her life.  In 1965, she moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin but later returned to Mason City.  Edna worked in the Pediatric Unit at Mercy Hospital.  She was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church where she volunteered and was a member of a church circle.
 
Edna is survived and lovingly remembered by her children, Dr. Meredith R. Saunders of Des Moines, Albert J. Saunders Jr. and wife Marylou of Covington, Georgia, Attorney Philip T. Saunders and wife Cherry of Las Vegas, Nevada and Greta Lou Jeffries and husband Everet of Newport News, Virginia; 19 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Irene Saunders of Hampton, Virginia.
 
Edna was preceded in death by her parents, son, Roger Saunders; grandsons, Vincent Albert Saunders and Meredith Roy Saunders Jr.; her former husband, Albert J. Saunders Sr.
