Dorothy M. 'Dottie' Slade

August 4, 1917 — August 24, 2013

Dorothy “Dottie” Slade was born at her grandmother’s house on a farm near Parkersburg, IA on August 4, 1917, daughter of Jenny (Bohlen) Fischer and Thomas Fischer. She worked as a hair dresser and waitress, to support her young widowed mother. She married Virgil Slade on September 24, 1939 at the “Little Brown Church” in Nashua, Iowa. Dottie grew up on a farm and graduated from Allison High School in Allison, IA. After her marriage, Dottie devoted her life to being a wife and a mom and to giving back to the many communities in which she lived, through church work and volunteering with local organizations to help others in need. She sold poppies for the American Legion, collected items for homeless shelters, visited hospitals for the mentally ill and worked with many schools. Dottie was very “social” and enjoyed fashion and playing bridge weekly. She worked at J.C. Penny’s for almost twenty years in the women’s department and had many loyal customers, who asked for “Dottie” to help them find outfits for special occasions. When they were quite small, her two grandchildren, Megan and Ryan began calling her “Grandma Nut-Nut” because she was always fun and silly. Dottie was very proud of that nickname! Dottie never met a baby animal, bird or flower that she didn’t like. She also enjoyed fishing, cooking and traveling. With her husband Virg, her daughter and her husband, two grandchildren and her special friend, Lyla Nyhus she traveled many places; Europe, the Carribean, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii and her daughter’s home in Maine were among her favorite destinations. Dottie is survived by her daughter, Judy (Slade) McCaskey and husband Ray of Chicago, IL and Maine; two grandchildren, Megan McCaskey and her husband, Jeremy Hoialmen of Minneapolis, MN and Ryan McCaskey of Chicago, IL; as well as her much beloved “granddog”, Scottish Terrier, Nolan, Judy and Ray’s pet. Dottie has eight nieces and nephews and many friends. She will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; sister, Janet Porter; and a brother in infancy. Ray and Judy wish to thank the staff at Good Shepherd Health Center, first floor southeast, for the excellent and loving care provided to their mother.
