Dorothy Ann Mathahs was born June 29, 1929, in Wesley, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Bertha Mathahs. Dorothy graduated from Riceville High School. Later, Dorothy moved with her parents to a farm in Thompson, Iowa. After high school, she went to work in Buffalo Center where she met her husband C. Burr Heitland. Dorothy married Burr on May 9, 1952 and they shared 59 ½ years of married life together. Dorothy was a dedicated and loving wife. Her family was most important to her and it was evident in all her daily life. In 1955, Dorothy and Burr moved to Mason City and she was employed by the City Assessor. In 1956, her first child was born and she resigned her job to care for her baby. She did not return to the workforce until all her children were in school. She then worked in the bookkeeping department for Sedars Pontiac- Cadillac. Her old boss found out that she was working again and asked her to come back to the City Assessor’s Office, which she did and she stayed there until her retirement. After retirement she enjoyed golfing with her husband. They joined the Niva old car club and enjoyed going to parades in the ’65 GTO convertible. Dorothy and Burr had the opportunity to travel places they had not been, including: Branson, Yellowstone, Black Hills, Arizona, Florida, and the Dakota’s. In her later years, Dorothy joined the Mason City Curves. It became her passion and she was very enthused to go there every day. She would not miss a single weekday workout, and if she did she would always go and make-up her work out on Saturday. She loved the place and the staff very much. Dorothy loved gardening. She always had fresh green beans, green peppers and tomatoes from her garden and canned as much garden produce as she could. Dorothy had a yard full of flowers and many indoor plants. Dorothy enjoyed sewing and made many quilts and blankets for her family. She also made many outfits for her children and grandchildren. She loved her grandchildren very much and enjoyed baking them goodies. She always sent armfuls of snacks home with them. She will be remembered for her chocolate pies, banana bars and chocolate chip cookies. She also enjoyed attending all of her grandchildren’s many activities. She spent a lot of time sitting in bleachers in various gyms and attending many baseball games. Dorothy was a long time, and very active member of the First Baptist Church in Mason City. She is survived by her loving husband, Burr, four children; Debra Heitland of Clear Lake, Greg (Doreen) Heitland of Mesa, AZ, Sandy (Jeff) Krekling of Hayfield, MN and Scott (Barb) Heitland of Mason City; 5 grandchildren: Kasey Krekling, Jordyn Krekling and Tyler Krekling all of Hayfield, MN and Cris Heitland and Katie Heitland both of Mesa, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents Harry & Bertha Mathahs and 2 Brothers Dale & John.
