Donald K. Petersen

Donald “Don” K. Petersen, 86, of Mason City, IA, died Monday, December 26, 2016, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. There will be no local services. Per his request, his cremains will be taken to Wyoming at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Donald Petersen memorial fund in care of the family.

Donald was born February 10, 1930, in Ventura, IA, the son of Kenneth and Verna (Overgaard) Petersen. He graduated from Ventura High School. In 1949, Don started in construction work with Beck and Fisher and retired 43 years later from Henkel Construction in 1992. In 1951, Don served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge in 1953. On February 8, 1985, he married Shirley (Bassett) Watts in Las Vegas, NV. Don enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending winters in Arizona. Don was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. He was also a life member in the NRA Association, life member of the Ventura Gun Club, past President of the Clear Lake Rifle & Pistol Club and competitive black powder shooter in Arizona.

Don is survived by his wife of 31 years: Shirley Petersen of Mason City; four children: Pam Case and husband Mike of Garner, IA, Dennis Petersen and wife Donna of Clear Lake, IA, LuAnn Jacobson and husband Brad of Blair, NE, and Andy Petersen and wife Anita of Chandler, AZ; two step children: Cindy Anderson and husband Cary of Marion Station, PA and Barb Bailey and husband Mike of Altoona, IA; 4 grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; sister: Charlotte Fell of Des Moines, IA; niece: Kris Fell of Quincy, MA; and brother-in-law: Teddy Bassett and wife Joyce of Cary, NC

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Arlyn Petersen; and brother-in-law: Joe Fell.
