Donald Earl McNeil, 88, of Clear Lake, died Monday, June 11, 2007 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Memorial services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday (June 14, 2007) at Apple Valley Assisted Living, 405 27th Ave. South, Clear Lake, IA, with the Rev. Jo Frahm-Watkins of the First United Methodist Church, Mason City officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa. Don was born October 4, 1918, in Rawlins, Wyoming, the son of George and Martha (Krueger) McNeil. Don graduated from High School in 1936. He served his country while in the Marines during WWII. He attended the University of Wyoming, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering; it is at the University where he met his wife Evelyn. He was married to Evelyn Wiskerke in Washington, D.C. in 1941; to this union two children were born. They lived in Washington, D.C where Don worked for the federal government as a mechanical engineer until moving Iowa where he worked for the Rock Island Arsenal. After retirement Don and his wife moved to Sun City, AZ where they spent 30 years. Don enjoyed being an amateur radio operator and was an active member of the MARS network, made exquisite jewelry, and enjoyed spending time using his computer. Don is survived by his wife of 66 years, Evelyn; two daughters, Marty McNeil Lundberg (John) of Clear Lake, Chris McNeil of Bel Air, MD; grandchildren, Kathy Lundberg Gates (David) of Prairieville, LA, Michael David Lundberg (Angie) of Ankeny, IA, Kurt McNeil Parker (Deann) of Baltimore, MD, and Andrew John Parker of Bel Air, MD; two great-grandchildren, Brian David Gates and Megan Elizabeth Gates and several nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, May (McNeil) McFeeters, George Ernest McNeil Jr., and Lawrence McNeil. ?His legacy to his heirs was not gold or words, but rather the silent example of what it means to be a Father and a Man.?
