Dale Richard ?Dick? Carter, 83, of 236 ? 14th Street SE, died Friday (March 12, 2004) at home. Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore, First Presbyterian Church officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. A gathering of family and friends will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. Memorials may be given to the Mason City High School Athletic Department. Dick was born September 10, 1920 in Mason City the son of Walter A. and Lura (Wentworth) Carter. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1939 and served in the US Navy during WW II. Dick married Lydia Dietz June 7, 1948 at the First Presbyterian Church in Mason City. Dick worked as a cabinetmaker for Mason City Millwork for over 40 years. Following retirement, he worked as a crossing guard at Harding Elementary School. For well over 40 years Dick worked as the score-keeper and timer at Mason City High School?s Athletic events as well as Mason City Junior College, NIACC. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, VFW, American Legion, Lime Creek Nature Center and had served as a Boy Scout Commissioner. Dick is survived by 2 sons, Rick Carter of Yakutat, Alaska, Mike Carter of Mason City; 4 grandchildren, Zachory Carter of Springfield, MO, Jessica Carter of Wasilla, Alaska, Michael Carter of Mason City, Ashley Carter of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; brother, Wentworth Carter of Osage. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lydia in May of 2003; sister, Elizabeth Johnson.
