Dennis Marvin Mertz, 65, of Mason City, died Thursday, August 11, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, August 19, 2016, at Epiphany Parish St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th Street S.E., with Rev. Neil Manternach officiating. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM with a scripture wake service at 6:30 PM at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Avenue.
Dennis Marvin Mertz was born on June 6th, 1951 in Algona, IA. The son of Ray and Marie (Dahlhauser) Mertz, he grew up on a farm outside of Algona and was a graduate of Bishop Garrigan High School in 1969. He was married to Renee Bauer in 1970 and over the next 29 years helped to raise 3 boys; Jacob, Jason, and Adam. A salesman at Lyon’s Toyota for over 20 years he sold many cars in the local area and was known by many. His favorite slogan was, “You can rent from Hertz, but buy from Mertz”. Denny was an active individual in and around Mason City, and could often be seen heading out of town on his road bicycle. A member of the local Iron house gym for over 20 years, he visited the facility at least a few times a week. In his later years he was able to enjoy purchasing a Harley Davidson motorcycle and spent his free time riding around the state with his group of long-time friends. He had a love for life, family and friends. Everyone will miss him dearly.
Dennis is survived by 3 children: Jacob Mertz (Katie) Connor and Annie, Jason Mertz (Dena) Ashlee and Gavin, Adam Mertz and longtime companion: Mary Jo Baumann, five siblings: Margene Flint of CA., Kathy (Dave) Hilbert of Missouri, Rochelle (Dave) Panthen of Nevada IA, Melvin Mertz, and Barbara (Denny) Smith of Naples, FL.
Mr. Mertz was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Ronald.
