David Lee Nielson

November 26, 1961 — February 26, 2021

David Lee Nielson, 59, of Mason City, IA passed away Friday, February 26, 2021 at his residence.

A gathering of friends and family will be held from 3 until 5 pm Sunday, March 14, 2021 at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Ave, Mason City.

David Lee Gonzo Nielson was born November 26,1961. He was adopted by Carlyle and Lila Nielson. He joined sisters, Jackie and Sandi (Don Meyer) and brother Steve. It was a great blessing and joy. The family had many wonderful memories growing up. He was blessed with virtuosity; he enjoyed playing guitar and singing. His mother loved to hear him play and his father joked about his rock music "what the hell kind of music is that!" He played with many bands over the years.

In 1997 he met Kay Siddell who lived with him for 10 years and stayed best friends until his passing. Together they opened his adoption records and proved his membership to the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians. He found he had more siblings, brothers Andrew Nielsen, Bruce Walley, and Patrick Nicholson, and sister Judean Nicholson. The reservation was one of his favorite places to be.

His health had declined due to complications from diabetes. He was working on getting back to playing in a band. The last days of his life were very happy because he had been approved for Social Security Disability and was going to be secure.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, great nephew Colton Garner, Donnie Garner, and Patrick Nicholson.
