Carol J. Winston, 77 of Mason City, died Friday, January 14, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Impatient Unit. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 22, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church, 100 S. Pierce Ave., with Rev. Paul Collier officiating. Per Carols request, her body was cremated. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor's choice in Carol's name.
Carol was born August 7, 1933 in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Leslie and Betty (Koenig) Sundeen. She was raised in Waterloo, attended high school in Dubuque, and attended the University of Iowa. She was united in marriage to Harold (Hal) Winston on June 11, 1955, at the Danforth Chapel, Iowa City, Iowa, before moving to Bergstrum Air Force Base in Austin, Texas, where her husband was stationed. Carol and Hal returned to Iowa City in 1957 for Hal to complete law school. In 1958, Hal and Carol moved to Mason City. Carol devoted much of her time to volunteering in the community. She was an announcer for KCMR for 23 years, also serving as President of the KCMR board and was one of the originators of KCMR LIVE. Carol was a church elder in the First Presbyterian Church and also taught Sunday school. She served on the Mercy Hospital Board, the Mercy Hospital Foundation Board, served as President of the Mercy Hospital Foundation Board and various other Mercy Hospital committees. Carol served on the YMCA board for many years and also served as its president. She was very active in the Mason City Community Theater, serving on the board and co-directing the production of Barefoot in the Park. Carol was a speech judge for Mason City High School and the surrounding area. Carol was active in the Girls Scouts and was a leader for several troops. She also worked with the Salvation Army in several capacities. Carol was very active in the origination of the first Iowa Independent Film Festival held at Music Man Square in 2007. Carol touched many lives in the community and was honored, along with her husband Hal, as Grand Marshal of the 2004 North Iowa Band Festival parade.
Carol enjoyed entertaining her friends and family and being a part of many social clubs, including the Mason City Womans Club, Study Club,
and her beloved Bridge Club. She was a 50+ year member of PEO Chapter GN and a past president. Carol enjoyed traveling with Hal throughout their life together and over the years visited many countries.
Carol is survived by her husband, Harold Hal Winston of Mason City; three daughters, Leslie (Bob) Yannetti of Woodland Hills, CA; Lisa (Bill) Shaw of Toluca Lake, CA; and Laura (Robert) Moritz of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Allison and Joanna Yannetti and Jane Moritz; brother-in-law, Keith (Celia) Winston and their children, Janet Key, Scott Winston and Steven Winston.
Carol is preceded in death by her parents; step-mother, Leona Sundeen and brother, David Sundeen.
